The nature of particles which initiate the indirect electrochemical reductive degradation (ECRD) of polycarbonates in dimethylformamide solutions is established. These substances are nucleophiles of two types: hydroxide ions and their complexes with dymethylformamide. The possibility of indirect ECRD ap- plication for surface and volume modification of polycarbonates is shown.
